High GEAR was a publication of the GEAR (Gay Education Awareness and Resources) Foundation and was first published in May, 1974, making it Ohio’s first gay newspaper written by and for Ohioans. We have 27 issues from 1974 to 1977.

Both GEAR and High Gear were all-volunteer operations. Earnings from the newspaper helped maintain a new gay hotline and provided seed money for a Gay Community Center. Impressively, the Gay Community Center evolved into today's LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland, the nation’s fifth longest continuously operating gay community center.
